Course Outline
Over the course of 5 sessions, we will explore the major events and commitments that have shaped us and the identities we have created.
Friday, October 25 - Session 1
This session will focus on the Stories We Tell. We are by nature storytellers when we want to express What Something Means -- the Why of our experiences. (Alternatively, we Describe a Process when we want to express How Something Happens.) Then, we will explore The Family Story and the Cultural Story that each of us is a part of, the stories that were underway when we arrived.
Friday, November 1 - Session 2
This session explores how and when each of us discovered that we have an identity that is unique within our family and distinct from the surrounding culture. How and when did we see ourselves Becoming Individuals. What external authorities did we encounter within and alongside our families?
Friday, November 8 - Session 3
This session explores the Adolescent and Young Adult Years. What were the key formative experiences that shaped us within our families? What historical events received our attention and how did we respond? Where did we live and how did that geography influence us?
Friday, November 15 - Session 4
This session reviews our Career Choices and Family Commitments. Smooth Sailing and/or Disruptions. What Fascinations held our attention? Hobbies, Collections, and Curiosities. Prized possessions. Developing personal Skills.
Friday, November 22 - Session 5
This session will explore How Others Matter -- our impacts on the world around us. What are the Causes that have mattered, to which we have contributed monetarily or by volunteering? What do we wish to be our Legacy?Over the course of 5 sessions, we will explore the major events and commitments that have shaped us and the identities we have created.
- Thursday, May 8, 15 RESISTANCE AND REDEMPTION: ART & MUSIC IN THE HOLOCAUST, Parts 1 & 2
How could a concentration camp inmate during the Holocaust cope with constant visual and auditory ugliness and savagery? Some Jews used their magnificent artistic gifts to create beauty for themselves and their fellow victims. We will examine those extremely talented men and women who understood that the only antidote to destruction was creation! Week 1 will focus on Artists and Week 2 on Music. - Thursday, May 22, WONDERFUL WOMEN RESCUERS OF THE HOLOCAUST
During the 1940's, when women were expected to be seen but not heard, we will learn about inspiring, though little-known women who defied their times and whose extreme courage and goodness saved thousands of Jews from the Holocaust!
About the Instructor
A retired English professor from Polk State College in Florida, Howard Kerner spent the last 30 years researching unknown people who performed acts of kindness and nobility during the Holocaust. Howard’s inspiring presentations can be heard at the Florida Holocaust Museum, University of South Florida, Eckerd College, churches, synagogues, libraries, and many civic organizations. He continues to create new programs that highlight noble people and the kindness in humanity.
